MKV vs MP4: What's the Difference?

Both are video containers. The useful question is which one works for your next step.

A container is not a quality setting

MKV and MP4 package video, audio and metadata. The codec and encoding settings determine picture quality; changing the extension does not improve it.

Choose for your destination

Check the player or editor you want to use before converting. An MP4 with compatible tracks is often a practical sharing copy. Keep your original MKV if it includes extra audio tracks or subtitles you need.
